China : a land of start ups ?
The China’s Silicon Valley located in Beijing’s Zhongguancun neighborhood is now the headquarters of a lot of Internet companies. But it’s also an incubator for a lot of start-ups. Indeed, a recent report conducted by the Zhongguancun regulatory commission indicates that there were more than 4000 startups in the area at the end of 2011. These figures shows that there is a good rate of entrepreneurship in the country, it’s besides more than during the period of the dot-com bubble. We don’t have a lot of recent figures but this number is certainly really higher now, particularly if we noticed the number of smartphones now in the market and the reduced cost to produce applications.
What is the situation of the financing ?
Then when you analyze how the companies get financed, the situation is better now even if it’s not so much easy. To explain that, in one year from 2010 to 2011, there was a growth of 17% concerning the number of start-ups. The business angels’ growth is 248%. Problems changed. Indeed, at the beginning it was the start-ups which searched for business angels and there was not enough BA for all the start-ups. Now the situation is totally different, there are too many Business angels and not so much great start-ups with an interesting potential.
What are the objectives of founders ?
Another interesting figure of the report is that 60% of founders are now searching for self-realization contrary to making a huge amount of money. Of course, they are still interested by money but they explain that it’s important for them to fulfill their dreams more than become the richest guy of the world. That’s why they choose to create a start-up instead of pursuing a regular career. They want something that reflects themselves.
To conclude the report show that a large part (47%) of entrepreneurs from Zhongguancun are under the age of 34.
